Rilakkuma lovers rejoice! Tucked away in Arashiyama, Kyoto is "Arashiyama Rilakkuma Sabo", the cutest Rilakkuma cafe. Stop by for sweet treats and snap pics with the kimono-clad Rilakkuma in front of the cafe!
Rilakkuma is one of the most popular Sanrio characters in Japan. There have been many pop-up events and cafes for this adorable character in the past, but this cafe is here to stay. Since it’s permanent, it’s perfect for anyone planning to visit Japan! The cafe is in Arashiyama, which is around an hour west of Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is famous for its bamboo grove, scenic fall foliage, and monkey mountain.
The Rilakkuma cafe in Kyoto is split into two levels -if you’re in a rush, there’s a takeout area on the 1st level that features yummy treats such as mini Rilakkuma castella cakes and Harajuku-style rolled crepes. Check out their current full list of takeout items here! While you generally don’t walk around with food in Japan, these little cakes are similar to festival style foods that are meant to be eaten while walking around and taking in the surrounding scenery.
There’s also souvenir shop on the 1st level that sells exclusive Rilakkuma themed items. From Rilakkuma shaped wagashi treats to tote bags and stationary, there’s an endless supply of goods to choose from! Check out their full catalog of goods here!
If you’re tired from walking around Arashiyama, there’s a sit-down restaurant on the 2nd level of the cafe. It has sets featuring Rilakkuma adorned versions of popular Japanese foods such as tsukemen, curry, and soba. Check out their full menu here!
In addition to the adorable food, there are great spots for photo ops! Walk past the cute Rilakkuma statues in the front, and you’ll find a small bamboo grove in the back of the shop. The bamboo grove has a stone Rilakkuma statue and some small lamps. It’s a cute homage to the larger bamboo grove Arashiyama is famous for.
*please note that the restaurant and takeout areas are closed at the moment due to COVID-19. The souvenir store is still operating at normal hours. I’ll update here when they reopen!
